Uppingham on Market Day: every Friday, from about 8.30am to mid-afternoon held in the old Market Square (so parking the car is not so easy on Fridays). Great fruit and veg, fresh fish, cheese, local food producers, bread, plants, household stuff and more. Love the hat stall. Everyone you know will be there. Watch out for speeding mobility scooters.
Antiques hunting in Uppingham: Uppingham has 5 antiques shops at the last count, from the vintage style of Junk & Disorderly on North Street East to the serious furniture of Garners at the east end of the High Street, with Mark Gilbert’s barn beside the Fire Station, the excellent Rutland Antiques Centre up Crown Passage and the easy-to-find Uppingham Antiques Centre on the High Street near the Market Square.
Nelsons Butchers: branches in Uppingham, Oakham and elsewhere. But most of all Malcolm the mobile butcher, who brings Nelsons‘ goodies to Rutland villages – our turn is Saturday morning, when there’s a queue on the High Street for the finest Melton Mowbray pork pies served up with the latest gossip (I mean news).
